Pak Jatiana lives up in the mountains where he and his wife worked as farmers. In 2015 he and his wife had a motorcycle accident resulting in Pak Jatiana having a neck injury and his wife breaking her leg. At that time, they were both taken to the hospital to receive care. His wife had surgery to put pins in her leg, however, Pak Jatiana’s family decided he should not have surgery. Shortly after that, he fell at home further injuring his neck. Since then, Pak Jatiana has not been able to walk and has lost strength in his arms and legs. He was unable to get out of bed and needed assistance from his wife and oldest daughter for daily activities.
Later that same year, the Access Life Bali mobility team provided Pak Jatiana with a wheelchair along with exercises for strengthening. Although Pak Jatiana does rely on his wife to help him in and out of the wheelchair, the wheelchair has significantly helped his wife in caring for him. Using a wheelchair has also allows Pak Jatiana to get out of bed and sit with his family in the living room or outside which lets him to be more involved in his family’s activities.
The mobility team continues to visit Pak Jatiana and his family to encourage them and help as we can. Although Pak Jatiana is unsure if his physical condition will improve, he is thankful for the new hope in his life and the encouragement from the mobility team, who he views as family now.
