In July 2021, the Water Team at Access Life Lombok surveyed a potential project in Batu Kantar, Narmada in West Lombok. When we met with the leader of this village, he was able to explain the challenge this community faced. More than 200 residents reside in this community and access water for their daily needs from a system that brings water from a nearby spring to a storage tank above the village. However, the water supply from this spring is insufficient to meet the daily needs of this community.
The residents of Batu Kantar had already begun a second project to develop another nearby spring to add capacity to their water system. When we met with them to survey the project, they had installed nearly half of the pipes needed to bring water from this new spring to the community. After completing our survey of this potential project, Access Life Lombok agreed to work alongside the residents to provide the remaining pipe necessary to tie this additional water source into the existing water network that serves the homes of the Batu Kantar village.
This project included the following items:
100 meters of 2" HDPE water pipe and 250 meters of 1" HDPE pipe and all necessary fittings were purchased and delivered to the project.
Worked with the community members to dig a trench and install a new HDPE water pipe.
Secured the new HDPE water pipe to a bridge at a river crossing to ensure it would not be disturbed during the rainy season.
Fixed several leaks in the existing water pipe, installed a new coupling on the existing 3" PVC water pipe from the spring, installed spigots at a common bathing area so the water would not constantly flow, and repaired an existing section of 2" PVC pipe that was disturbed when the trench was dug for the new water pipe.
Installed a metal casing pipe across a small drainage ditch adjacent to the road crossing to ensure it would not be disturbed by debris or water flowing through this ditch.
Installed a check valve at the connection point to the existing water system as a water from the existing water tank flowed back towards the new spring, impeding flow.
The water team, alongside the Batu Kantar community, is pleased to have completed this project in December 2021. The additional water supply from the second spring is sufficient to meet this community's water supply needs.
