As the team is serving in the community, there have been various opportunities to share about Chaya with individuals and families who have Chaya plants growing near them. They have never been educated about its benefits, how to re-plant it, and how to cook it.
One family had a row of Chaya trees growing as a fence around their property. They had never picked the leaves and eaten them, but instead thought they were only fit for consumption by their goats.
The Social Team informed them about the high nutritional content of the leaves and that humans can also consume them. Chaya is high is iron, calcium, and vitamin C. It also has a good amount of protein. We demonstrated how to propagate the chaya by planting the sticks to multiply their supply. We explained various ways to cook the leaves. The family was very grateful to the team for teaching them about the Chaya plant and reported that they immediately began to cook and eat the leaves to improve their health.
