The village of Batu Rakit is located in the district of North Lombok and was near the epicenter of the 2018 earthquakes that struck Lombok. This community has access to existing springs that were developed prior to Access Life Lombok meeting with local officials. The problem for this community was the pipe that was originally installed. When the springs were initially developed, the pipe used was of poor quality and was not buried underground. Over time, damage from the sun, farming activities, and normal pipe degradation resulted in countless leaks along the pipe network. Access Life Lombok Water Team was asked by the community to provide and assist in installing water pipe to replace a portion of the current system.
After lengthy discussions with community officials, we agreed to provide 1,000 meters of water pipe. We worked together to decide the best location for the new pipe. We had purchased and delivered the pipe, but an issue quickly arose. We were not aware that this community was divided into two sections and only half of this community would benefit from the new water pipe. The people who were not benefiting from this project viewed this as not fair and asked that we help the entire community. Through a process, we were able to bring the two sides together to discuss potential options for resolving this issue. In the end, the community leaders were able to come up with a revision to the proposed design that would provide a section of pipe for both sides of the village. This design would deliver water from two different springs to these respective communities. The water pipe has been installed and the entire community is enjoying water from the springs.
